Maryland Film Festival Partners with PNC Bank to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Parkway
- Month-long “Latin American Visionary Cinema” series kicks off Sept. 16
- Series to showcase emerging filmmakers from eight countries
Baltimore, MD – The Maryland Film Festival (MdFF) is pleased to present a Latin American Visionary Cinema series in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Made possible through the generous support of PNC Bank, MdFF will honor the rich and diverse culture of filmmaking in the Latin American community by bringing twelve influential films to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Parkway (SNF Parkway) from Sept. 16 to Oct. 15.
This film series, the first one of its kind in Baltimore, aims to recognize and showcase the inspiring contributions and presence of Hispanic and Latin Americans in the United States and film world.
Kicking off the series is Club Sandwich, a 2013 Mexican comedy film written and directed by Fernando Eimbcke. Eimbcke’s film is an incomparable blend of poignant teen romance and gentle comedy, spiced with just a dash of transgression. It’s a rare cinematic masterwork that’s also crowd-pleasing, laugh-out-loud funny, surprising, and eminently relatable.
The opening night of Club Sandwich will take place on Sept. 16 at the SNF Parkway (5 W. North Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland). Jed Dietz, founding director of MdFF, will introduce the film and host a post-screening audience discussion.
“PNC has a long history of embracing and promoting diversity as a core value,” said Laura Gamble, PNC regional president for Greater Maryland. “The Maryland Film Festival’s ‘Latin American Visionary Cinema’ series celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month by presenting a wide range of films by Latin American artists from around the country.”
“The mission of Maryland Film Festival, within our new home at the SNF Parkway, is to showcase work by diverse, emerging voices in film. With the support of PNC Bank, we’re able to bring this unique line-up of films highlighting outstanding Hispanic filmmakers to Baltimore. We’re very excited to share this series, the first of its kind, with the entire Baltimore community,” said Jed Dietz, founding director of MdFF. “Throughout the month, you’ll see films that are challenging, compelling, and highlight the breadth and depth of Latin American films.”
In addition to Club Sandwich, the SNF Parkway’s Hispanic Heritage Month programming will include:
- Cold Water of the Sea (Paz Fábrega. Costa Rica)
- Embrace of the Serpent (Ciro Guerra, Colombia/Venezuela/Argentina)
- Gigante (Adrían Biniez, Uruguay)
