German-Jewish émigré Ernst Lubitsch (1892-1947) was so well-known in his day that the phrase “the Lubitsch touch” would immediately conjure the same image in people’s minds of brilliantly scripted, sophisticated comedies. Unlike prior films such as Trouble in Paradise (1932), Design for Living (1933), this one takes on the serious topic of Nazism, though with the same uproarious bite Lubitsch always employed. Professor Reed takes us on a deep dive into this masterwork of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
