Kimberly Eason – Gender Advisor
Kimberly is the gender advisor where she is spearheading the Partnership for Gender Equity. Previously, as the director of producer services and relations at Fairtrade International in Bonn, Germany, she held responsibility for producer capacity building services for over one million Fairtrade producers in 63 countries. She served four years as member of the Board of Directors of the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) and is co-founder of the International Women’s Coffee Alliance (IWCA) and served as its president for five years. She is also the co-founder of JavaJog for a Cause.
Amaris Gutierrez-Ray – Director of Roasting- Joe Coffee Company
I’m from the North Georgia mountains in the Southeast US and also the village of Masaya, “The Cradle of Folklore,” in Nicaragua. A lover of stories and the people that tell them, I have always been interested primarily in the culture and communities of this world in coffee. I started as a barista in Atlanta, GA and then London, UK. Five years ago I started learning to roast in NYC and I’ve found it to be one of the most rewarding pursuits of my adult life. Moving into my current role of Roasting Operations Manager gave me encouragement that the skillset I’m learning will be valued regardless of my age/sex/location. I am privileged to work on a team of four roasters, three of whom are women. I founded the series “Women in Coffee Project” to create a platform for women in leadership roles at origin to offer their perspective. I also founded the Northeast Roaster Forum — 2019 is its inaugural year. The work will never be over — there will always be more complexity to learn from each other, more perspective and sensitivities to gain from connecting with producing families, and more power in building something new together.

Gender equity involves all of us. It affects us in our daily lives and takes on different meaning depending upon our country, our culture, our jobs and our different expression of gender. What does gender equity mean for a coffee family, a roaster or a coffee drinker? How do we relate to and connect with one another around the same passion for coffee?
Gender in Coffee opens the conversation about gender roles, women’s empowerment, masculinity, women’s coffee and the importance of working towards gender equality for the sustainability of the coffee industry.
Filmed between January and March 2018, from Mexico to the United States, Gender in Coffee follows the story of women and men involved in the production, transformation and consumption of coffee.
