ABOUT THE HOSTS
 
Jem Cohen is a filmmaker/photographer who’s feature-length films include Museum Hours (MdFF 2013), Counting, Chain, Benjamin Smoke, Instrument, and World Without End (No Reported Incidents). Shorts include Little Flags and Anne Truitt – Working. His films are in the collections of NYC’s Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney, The Jewish Museum, and D.C.’s National Gallery, and have been broadcast by PBS, Arte, and the Sundance Channel. He’s had retrospectives at Harvard Film Archive, London’s Whitechapel and NFT, Indielisboa, Oberhausen, and Spain’s Punto de Vista. Photography exhibitions include Robert Miller Gallery, SF Camerawork, and the Sharjah Biennial. His multi-media show with live music, We Have an Anchor, was a main stage production in the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave series and London’s Barbican Centre.
 
Music legend, Ian MacKaye founded Dischord Records as a teenager in 1980 with partner Jeff Nelson. The label has gone on to release music from more than 60 bands, with more than 160 albums over the last 25 years and counting. As musicians Ian and Jeff went on to form Minor Threat, who along with Bad Brains are credited in the early 80s with introducing the D.C. hardcore ethic to an audience well beyond Washington, D.C. In 1986, Ian formed Fugazi with Joe Lally, Brendan Canty and Guy Picciotto. Since 2001, Ian has played in The Evens, a duo with Amy Farina. They have released two albums and have toured extensively in North America, Europe, South America, Australia, and New Zealand.
 
In 2009, MacKaye guest-hosted the MdFF screening of the 1992 French TV documentary, Nina Simone: La Legende at The Charles Theatre.
 
Jem Cohen & Ian MacKaye are longtime friends and collaborators and we are excited to bring both artists back to Baltimore to speak about their work at The Parkway.

Quite close to London, but for many, a million miles away, Southend-on-Sea is a town along the Thames estuary. World Without End (No Reported Incidents), the new documentary from Jem Cohen (Museum Hours, Counting) is a portrait of this place – everyday streets, everyday birds, unflagging tides, mud, and sky. But it is also about humanity and history, about prize-winning Indian curries, an encyclopedic universe of hats, and a nearly lost world of proto-punk music.
